You can register on gumtree.com.au with an email address and password, or with the Register with Facebook and Register with Google buttons. Whichever you choose, the account has to be verified with an Australian mobile number: landlines and overseas numbers are not accepted. Without one you can still browse the ads, but you cannot create an account.
The same account works in the Gumtree app, called Gumtree: Find local ads & jobs, for iPhone and Android. It is not shared with Gumtree UK or South Africa: in October 2022 the Australian site was bought by the company now called Gumtree Australia Markets, listed on the ASX and separate from the other two.
Gumtree Pay and shipping in Australia
Plenty of deals are still done face to face. When buyer and seller agree to pay online, the seller taps Request Payment in the chat and the buyer pays through Gumtree Pay, which runs on Adyen and takes Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, Google Pay and Apple Pay. The buyer pays a platform fee of 3% of the total, with a minimum of 1 dollar and a maximum of 200 dollars, or 0.3% with PayTo; sellers pay nothing.
Ads with a Shipping Offered badge can be sent through Gumtree's shipping feature with a delivery provider the seller arranges. The money is held until the item has been delivered and you have had a chance to inspect it, and you have three days after delivery to raise a dispute. Gumtree itself does not deliver anything and is not the carrier, so be wary of WhatsApp or SMS messages offering Gumtree delivery.
