Gumtree

Gumtree was founded in London in March 2000 and bought by eBay in 2005. Today the name covers three independent businesses. After eBay's classifieds arm passed to Adevinta, the UK site was sold to O3 Industries and Novum Capital at the end of 2021, Gumtree South Africa went to Impresa Capital in July 2022, and Gumtree Australia now belongs to Gumtree Australia Markets, a company listed in Sydney.

So the right Gumtree is simply the one in the country where you want to buy, and a search on one never shows ads from the others. Elsewhere the name has gone: there is no Gumtree in the United States today, and the Polish site, gumtree.pl, stopped accepting ads in March 2022 and closed on 7 April 2022.

On BuyHub, Gumtree Australia works from the website without any extension. Set a price range, sort by newest or by price, and BuyHub translates the titles and shows each Australian dollar price in your currency. A radar on that search keeps watching Gumtree day and night, without needing your phone or computer on.

Gumtree is a classifieds brand that began in London as a noticeboard for newly arrived Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans, hence a name taken from the Australian word for eucalyptus. Today it has separate sites in the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa. Private sellers and businesses advertise everything from furniture and electronics to cars, and many categories are free to post in. Buyer and seller deal directly, with collection in person or delivery when the seller offers it.

In Australia, where it launched in 2007, it is one of the most widely used classifieds sites, with listings organized by city and region. Household clear-outs bring toys from the 1980s and 1990s, retro consoles, card collections, figurines and antique furniture onto the site. Ads are in English, priced in pounds, Australian dollars or rand; many sellers only offer pickup, so it is worth asking whether they will ship.
