Kijiji Canada
Peer-to-peer marketplace · kijiji.ca
Kijiji (kijiji.ca) is a Canadian classifieds site where private sellers and dealers post ads city by city, in English and French. BuyHub works as a search engine on top of it, straight from your browser: filter by price, seller or shipping, see Canadian dollar prices in your currency and get an alert when a new ad matches.
What is Kijiji Canada, and is there a Kijiji in the US?
Kijiji is run from Toronto and, in its own words, operates exclusively in Canada. eBay did use the name elsewhere: a US version ran in selected cities from 2007 until it was rebranded eBay Classifieds in 2010, in Germany Kijiji was the forerunner of eBay Kleinanzeigen, and the Italian kijiji.it closed on 31 May 2022, sending its users to Subito. Kijiji itself passed to Adevinta in 2021, together with the rest of eBay's classifieds business, and still belongs to it.
For a buyer in the United States, that means Canadian sellers, prices in Canadian dollars and a border in between. Plenty of ads are written for local pickup, so BuyHub's shipping filter is a quick way to keep only the ads where the seller offers to ship.
Using BuyHub as a Kijiji search engine
Kijiji's own search starts from a keyword and a location. BuyHub searches the whole of Canada at once and lets you choose private sellers or dealers, items for sale or wanted ads, ads with shipping and a price range, then sort by newest, price or distance. If you search in another language, the titles come back translated, and a radar watches Kijiji around the clock and tells you when a new ad fits.
Kijiji is one of the most widely used classifieds sites in Canada. eBay launched it in Quebec in February 2005 and it went nationwide before the year was out; the name is Swahili for “village”. The site is bilingual, in English and French, and groups listings by province and city, so buyers can stick to their own area or look further afield. Buyers and sellers deal with each other directly, haggle over the price and settle between them on pickup or shipping.
The collecting interest lies in what comes out of private homes across the country: old toys, retro games, trading cards, figurines, period furniture and memorabilia, often priced by owners who want them gone rather than by specialist dealers. Prices are in Canadian dollars and many sellers are local, so anyone outside Canada should confirm shipping before committing.
